Services
The Access Services Department uses Interlibrary Loan to provide materials unavailable at UNC by borrowing from other Libraries. Depending on location and availability, it can take from 5 days to 3 weeks (or longer) to obtain requested material. The University Libraries cannot guarantee the availability of the material or the length of time it may take to obtain. Popular videos, DVDs and CDs are often difficult to get through Interlibrary Loan, and this type of request will be given a low priority. We recommend using Prospector to obtain these items rather than requesting them through Interlibrary Loan.
Patrons should notify ILL if an item is no longer needed. Patrons are notified by e-mail when an item arrives, and articles are either sent to the patron by mail in a paper format or by e-mail in an electronic format.
Other libraries wishing to borrow material:
See Interlibrary Loan Information for Other Libraries.
Interlibrary Loan services are available at the Circulation Desk during all hours the library is open. Materials and request forms can be picked up or dropped off at the Circulation Desk. Materials can be returned at the Circulation Desk or any of the library book drops on campus. Staff can be reached by telephone at 970-351-2671
Charges
There is no charge to UNC faculty, staff, or students for Interlibrary Loan services.
Loan Periods
The loan period for books is determined by the lending library and is usually at least 1 week. The due date is written on the colored band attached to the item.
Overdue Materials and Lost Books
Books must be returned by the date written on the colored band attached to the item. Overdue ILL items incur fines. Items overdue for 28 days or more are considered lost and a replacement charge of at least $100.00 per item is assessed.
Borrowing Dissertations
Dissertations can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. Many libraries send only microform copies, or do not lend dissertations. If a dissertation is not available on loan it can often be obtained from UMI for a fee.
Prospector
Prospector is a unified catalog of academic, public and special libraries in Colorado and Wyoming. Anyone can view the Prospector catalog holdings; however, only persons currently enrolled as UNC students, UNC faculty or staff can use the document delivery function.
You have 10 days to pick up material at the location you chose for delivery. Items not picked up within 10 days will be returned to the lending library. Most Prospector items are loaned for 21 days use. Bound journals and selected media items are loaned for one week only. If the item is a 21 day loan, Prospector allows one 21 day renewal. Bound journals and media items cannot be renewed. To renew an item, either stop at or call the UNC Circulation desk, or request your own renewal through My Account in The Source
