Fall Events - Banned Books Week / Weld County Reads

Weld County Reads

We are joining the Weld Library District and a number of other sponsors to present Weld County Reads, a community-wide reading project, during September and October. Join in by reading Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima and participating in one of a number of follow-up events.

Free copies of the book are available in the Michener Library first floor Reference Area while supplies last.

Events at UNC include:

~ Celebration of Intellectual Freedom (in conjunction with our Banned Books Week observance)
This event will feature readings in English and Spanish from Bless Me, Ultima and a presentation on intellectual freedom by Jamie LaRue, Director of Douglas County Libraries.
Monday October 1, 7 PM, Michener Library first floor

~ Anaya's World
A short documentary film about Anaya will be shown, followed by remarks from UNC faculty members Michael Welsh and Alfonso Rodriguez about Anaya, his use of southwestern geography and history in his books, and his role in Chicano and Southwestern literature.
Wednesday October 17, 7 PM, Lindou Auditorium

~ Book Discussion Group
Join us to discuss Bless Me, Ultima. UNC faculty, staff, and students are welcome.

Banned Books Week

Michener Library is once again preparing to observe Banned Books Week. In addition to the Celebration of Intellectual Freedom mentioned above, the following events are planned.

Readings from Banned or Challenged Books
In an effort to raise awareness of the issue of banned books, the Library is looking for volunteers to read for a few minutes from their favorite banned or challenged book between the hours of 9:30 AM. and 3:00 PM. during the week of October 1st-October 5th (on October 5th hours are 9:30 to noon). Rally in Support of the Freedom to Read
Join us for a rally in support of intellectual freedom and first amendment rights in general and specifically the freedom to read, the right to read banned/challenged books, and the necessity of libraries to support/facilitate these freedoms. Students will be involved in making signs as well as participating in the rally, so please contact one of the following people by September 26th if you are interested in participating:
