Until 1918, athletic training classes were held in the basement of the Normal School Building.  That structure had two other names during its lifetime, the Administration Building (1906-31) and Cranford Hall (1931-72).

Gunter’s facilities included the school’s swimming pool that is now under the floor of the building’s small gymnasium.

Left: The Normal School’s male athletic teams were made up of a combination of college-level athletes, training school students, and faculty.  Men were in short supply on campus. 
Middle: This photo, taken 1899, pictures James Garcia seated next to the ’99 ball and wearing the “CN” jersey. Garcia was the school’s first Spanish surnamed graduate.
