Three Cups of Tea Discussion - Fall 2009
University Libraries, along with Teresa Sellmer from the School of English Language and Literature, will hold a discussion of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson on October 20, 3:30-4:30 in the Michener Library Gallery area. Tea and cookies will be provided.

Library Fee - Fall 2009
To maintain library resources and avoid cancellation of library subscriptions for journals and databases, the Board of Trustees approved a library fee effective with this academic year. The library fee is to be used to cover inflationary costs for print and online materials in the University Libraries collections plus limited funding for new resources. In the past the total cost for the University Libraries collections has been paid from tuition revenue and support from the state. These sources alone are no longer sufficient to provide the library resources needed to support the curricular and research needs of the university community.

First Year Student Common Reading - Fall 2009
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson was selected for both the First Year Student Common Reading and the High Plains Library District Community Read. Librarians have created an accompanying research guide for resources on education and culture in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Google Book Settlement Deadline for Authors - Fall 2009
By September 4 authors who hold copyright for their books published before January 5, 2009, must decide whether to participate in the settlement of the copyright infringement lawsuit brought against Google for scanning millions of books from major libraries. These decisions are important because they will affect the ability of authors to control future access to their books. A handout for authors about how to respond to the settlement is available from the Association of Research Libraries website. This information is being provided to the UNC community by the University Libraries Scholarly Communication Committee.

Author Rights Presentation - Spring 2009
Kevin Smith, Scholarly Communications Officer at Duke University, will give a presentation on author rights related to copyright entitled “ Who will control faculty scholarship, or, will your book be in Google?” on Tuesday, April 21, from 1-2 p.m. in the Panorama Room at the University Center. Copyright and author rights are becoming increasingly important in the evolving digital environment of faculty scholarship. As Duke’s Scholarly Communications Officer, Kevin’s principal role is to teach and advise faculty , administration, and students about copyright, intellectual property licensing and scholarly publishing. Women’s HERstory Month Read-In - Spring 2009
The School of English Language and Literature and University Libraries are sponsoring the 2009 Women’s HERstory Month Read-In. The UNC Read-In will be on March 25, 2009 from 11AM - 2PM at Michener Library in the Gallery. Members of the UNC community will read aloud works by women authors. We invite you to join us as we share these works.

Women's Reverence for the Earth: Fact &Fiction - Spring 2009
An exhibit by freelance illustrator and former UNC student Eris Klein. Books associated with women artists and artistic expression about women, as well as goddess-related fiction and scholarship are included. The exhibit will be up for the month of March - Women’s History Month. A reading series continues on Thursdays through April at 6:30 PM. Click for more details.

National African American Read-In - Spring 2009
The English Education Program of the School of English Language and Literature, in conjunction with the School of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies and University Libraries is joining over one million readers participating in the Twentieth National African American Read-In. The event is sponsored by the Black Caucus of NCTE (the National Council of Teachers of English). The UNC Read-In will be on February 25, 2009 from 11AM -2PM at Michener Library. Members of the UNC community will read aloud works by African American writers. We invite you to join us as we share these wonderful works. 75 Summers: UNC's Little Theatre of the Rockies - Spring 2009
An exhibit celebrating the 75-year history of the Little Theatre of the Rockies will be on display from January 12 to February 13 in the Mari Michener Gallery. The exhibit includes a number of items from the Libraries' Archival Services collection.

Banned Books Week - University Libraries expresses support for intellectual freedom by holding annual readings of banned and challenged books during Banned Books Week. This year, readings will be held daily in Michener Library between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. during the week of September 29-October 3. Big Read 2008 - University Libraries will join the High Plains Library District in participating in the Big Read 2008, from September 21 through October 31. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Big Read pulls the community together to read, discuss, and celebrate one book. This year's book is the science fiction classic Fahrenheit 451. Stop by the Michener Library Reference Area to pick up a reader's guide, a list of events, and a free copy of the book while supplies last. Watch for details about a book discussion to be held at Michener Library.
Cheese & Chat - University Libraries will host an open house to welcome new and returning faculty to campus! Please mark your calendars for Cheese & Chat 2008, on Thursday, September 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Michener Mezzanine @ Michener Library. Survey Drawing Winners - Did you take our survey about social software and libraries in May? Six lucky students were drawn at random to win iTunes gift cards as our way of saying “Thanks for your help with the survey!” Again, many thanks for helping us learn what you think of Facebook, MySpace, SecondLife, IM technologies, and libraries.
Database Changes - Watch for changes in our online databases. Access to several FirstSearch and Gale/InfoTrac article indexes has ceased, but we've added a number of ProQuest titles.

First Floor Renovation - The Access Services area on the first floor of Michener Library will be renovated during the summer. Circulation and Interlibrary Loan will be temporarily located on the lower level of Michener.

The Friends of the UNC Libraries will resume their monthly used book sales on Wednesday, September 5, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, on the first floor of Michener Library.
We are pleased to announce that beginning September 1, 2007, you will have access to additional JSTOR collections through the UNC Libraries' web site. We are adding the Arts & Sciences II, III, and IV Collections to our existing Arts & Sciences I and Mathematics & Statistics Collections (aquired in September 2006). Studying for finals? Michener Library will be open until 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and until midnight on Sundays through Thursdays during the last two weeks of classes and Finals Week.
The University Libraries Assessment Committee would like to say Thank You to the more than 1,100 people who responded to the LibQual+TM survey over the past three weeks. We’re having a quick event in the Michener Gallery from 12:15 to 12:45 on Tuesday, 24 April to announce the prize winners. Learn about Banned Books Week in Michener Library, September 25 - 29. An exhibit will feature many books that have been banned or challenged, including selections from the American Library Association's list of 100 most frequently banned or challenged books of 1990-2000. The Pharos Print System from UNC's Information Technology department is now in effect campus-wide. Students are given $8 of free prints to begin the year and may charge more prints to their student accounts or a credit card. Non-UNC patrons must purchase a Print Card.
Authentication, or login, will be required to use most computers in Michener and the Skinner Music Libraries, as well as other campus computer labs, by fall semester. This will help to ensure priority access for UNC affiliated patrons as well as security for the campus network.

New Databases for Fall 2005 include AnthroSource (from the American Anthropological Association), General Science Abstracts, GoENC.com (materials for math and science educators), Humanities International Complete.
Banned Books Week is September 24 through October 1. Stop by the Michener Library Reference area to see our display featuring many of the 100 most frequently challenged books from 1990 to 2000. Learn more about Banned Books Week from the American Library Association web site. The University Libraries supports principles outlined by the Library Bill of Rights (American Library Association), the Freedom to Read Statement (American Library Association and Association of American Publishers), and the Freedom to View Statement (American Film and Video Association).
You'll see some changes in Michener Library. All reference and circulation services will be offered at the first floor Reference desk and Circulation desk. Newly reconfigured service points on the lower level and 2nd floor will offer directional assistance for finding materials in the collections.
We are pleased to announce that the videotape and DVD collections, located on the 2nd floor, are now open for browsing. You are invited to stop in, browse the shelves, and check out one of the many items in this collection.
Full-text access to over 1600 titles on Science Direct is now available! Members of the university community have full-text access to all of the Elsevier and Cell Press journal titles in the database back to 1995 and titles previously published by Academic Press IDEAL back to 1993. These titles represent more than a tenfold increase over the Elsevier titles that the Libraries' subscribed to in print. This increase is made possible through a consortial license agreement negotiated with other members of the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries. Access to individual journal titles on Science Direct is available from the Periodical Title search option on The Source. Full text in Science Direct is also accessible via links from citations in other UNC databases.
The University Libraries is conducting an assessment survey using LibQUAL+, an assessment tool that will allow comparison with peer institutions. The online survey will be open for responses from Monday, March 28 through Friday, April 15. Faculty, students, and staff will receive an email message with a link to the survey. There is also a link on the Libraries web site. Your participation will help the Libraries better serve the UNC campus.
An exhibit called Tip & Mitten: The Making of a Successful Reading Series is currently on display on the lower level of Michener Library at the entrance to the Archival Services Department. Occupying one display case, the exhibit was curated by Bette Rathe, Education Librarian. Tip & Mitten was one of the titles in the enormously successful elementary reading book series created in the 1950s by UNC faculty members Paul McKee, Annie McCowen, M. Lucile Harrison, and Elizabeth Lehr and published by Houghton-Mifflin. The exhibit can be seen whenever the Michener Library is open.

2004

New resources include RIPM (Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals), Kinesiology Publications, a new interface for SPORTDiscus, Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, and Social Sciences Citation Index through the Web of Science.
More new online products include reference databases such as the Gale Virtual Reference Library, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, and CQ Researcher. We also have some new article indexes, including Communication and Mass Media Complete and Online Geographical Bibliography.
The University Libraries did not conduct a serials review project this year. Nevertheless, some departments did identify print subscriptions to cancel or change to electronic format.
Stop in and join us for coffee near the main entrance to Michener Library. Our new coffee cart serves coffee, hot chocolate, and even chai tea, as well as muffins and other snacks. (The coffee cart is closed during the summer.)
Have you checked out our Current Reading Collection? We have an easily browsable collection of approximately 400 new fiction and general interest non-fiction books on the first floor of Michener Library. During Spring 2004, we conducted a survey about the use of this collection.
Faculty can now place course materials on Electronic Reserve, with access through The Source, our online catalog.

2003

Several new article indexes and improved access to online journals will enhance your research activities this year. New collections of online journals include Project Muse and PsycArticles, and new article indexes include Iter: Gateway to Middle Ages and Renaissance, NBER Working Papers, Social Sciences Abstracts, Wildlife and Ecology Studies Worldwide, Women's Resources International, RILM Music Abstracts, MathSciNet, and SciFinder Scholar. We also now subscribe to the online version of ERIC documents since 1997, ERIC E*Subscribe.
During Spring 2003, the UNC Libraries conducted a survey of faculty, staff, and students using LibQUAL+, an online questionnaire developed by the Association of Research Libraries.
Online Virtual Reference - AskColorado is an online "virtual reference" service provided by librarians from over 40 Colorado libraries. The service is available 24 hours a day. UNC librarians provide 7 hours each week of reference assistance through the service, but it is available at all hours to the UNC community.
Look for the new furniture in Michener Library. This summer, new chairs were added on the first floor, and tables and chairs were added in the alcoves and other areas on the third floor.
Check out our collection of current and popular fiction and nonfiction books located in the Current Reading Area, a comfortable area on Michener Library's first floor next to the Mari Michener Art Gallery. Books circulate for 3 weeks.
