William Robert Ross, President, 1948-1964
A Colorado native, Ross had served as president of Trinidad Junior College, and was Frasier's Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds before being named College president. Ross had a long history of teaching and administration in public education throughout the state, and he knew what kinds of teachers were needed. Ross took a very practical approach to education, creating programs such as Special Education and Nursing, for which there was a demand in Colorado. Ross was faced with not only preparing for the post-war influx of students, but then for the baby boom generation. He purchased what became the Darrell Homes (West) Campus, and set in motion the expansion of what was then Colorado State College.

Images from the 1959 Cache La Poudre
The Cache La Poudre year books documented student activities at the
University of Northern Colorado for the years 1907-1971, 1979-1984, 2000-2001.
Cranford Hall is featured on the front cover of the 1959 Cache La Poudre. Prominent Colorado architect Robert S. Roeschlaub designed Cranford Hall as well as the 1907 Library on campus.
The first building on campus, the Normal School Building, was built in stages, first the east wing, then the center, and then the west wing. The cornerstone was laid on June 13, 1890. From 1906-1931 the building was known as the Administration Building and from 1931-1972, it was Cranford Hall.
Cranford Hall was the central academic and administrative building on campus for many years. A major fire occurred in Cranford in 1949. In 1972, Cranford Hall, condemned as unsafe, was demolished.
